When taking the ends of fret tangs off how do you guarantee not to file into fret causing perceived lift when making them flush?

Hi There, I've seen a number of jigs, Some seem like they might work with specific size frets but we all know that even same sized frets have some variances depending batch and where on the line it came off the spool. No matter how i do it I seem to scrape the bottom of the fret trying to make it perfectly flush. I've considered using small rotary round burr or cylinder and only touching the tang so if it does go to deep its…

neck reset guild 512

Hi, I should do a neck reset on a Guild 512B from probably 1973. I have done neck resets before, but this is the first on a guitar that has some value. I want to look out for information about this specific model before i start working. Has anyone done a neck reset on a simular model? What kind of neck joint did they use, and what are the dimensions? Is there anything specific to look out for? I will probably not start working on the guitar…

Great answers from Ian and Tony!!!! If you can paint some reducer around the joint, wait until it activates and cut the nitro with a scalpel it will improve your chances with the finish issues. You'll…

Cracked Fingerboard Fill ? ('66 Jose Ramirez)

1966 Jose Ramirez 2A Flamenco with a split/cracked fingerboard. It's been cracked for years, and is in stable condition at humidity. Spans from 11/12th fret to the sound hole. I've filled smaller splits/cracks with ebony dust and superglue, or black superglue in the past, and had great results. Do any of you ever use ebony shavings to spline these? (likely need to pull frets for that) I'd love to hear how you approach these, and when you d…

I've never used ebony shavings. That's getting pretty wide, though and it's on a nice guitar, so I might try if going for best results. The main problem is the frets. Are you planning on a refret ? If…

I alway start with the primaries - red, yellow, blue - black and white and then a very neutral brown. The idea that with those colors you can mix into anything. Turns out, pigment mixing doesn't work…

Help please! Black lacquer finish & Gluboost

Hello! Brand new member here following the recommendation of Rick at Gluboost. He suggested that I reach out to this group to get help with my restoration project. I'm actually looking to restore vintage dining chairs (6) that have chips on their black lacquer finish. Rick confirmed that Gluboost should be a good option for refinishing the chairs but I'm having the hardest using the product to get the results I want (sad photos attached…

I can certainly do a consult. This is a fussy bit of work though and is the type of thing that, on guitars, has broken the soul of quite a few repair people over the years. I don't want to do any gate…
