F5-L Mandolin Binding Repair
Martin D-18VM No truss rod?
In the process of evaluating the repairs needed on this guitar I checked to see if the truss rod was working. There is hole in the transverse brace where you would normally insert a truss rod, but all I see is the end of a metal bar with a smallish hole in the center. I tried several allen wrenches that would fit in the hole, but nothing seems to grab. Did they really eliminate the adjustable truss rod on this vintage reproduction? Here'…
Washburn g10v micro adjust
Hello, Help needed please! 🙏 It’s a Washburn g10v that I am trying to source parts for. The owner wants to do a full restore but we can’t move forward with the job as the trem is missing the micro tuner thumb nuts. The trem is a big old rare thing with 2001 on the edge of it. Please see picture for reference. (Taken from reditt, a common problem it looks like) I have one of the thumb nuts here and I think it’s a #no.5 -44 UNF thread. But it’s…

Dealing with anxiety. Menthal healt day: How luthiery saved me 2 times.
Hello everyone, this will be a long post. I usually describe my passion for luthiery as a "fire." I can easily remember the day I realized that I wanted this to be what I would do for the rest of my life. It started as pure joy; learning day by day was like unwrapping a new surprise. I did everything right: studied, practiced, studied, practiced. I built my own jigs and tools, and I even did a small apprenticeship with a local luthier. Wh…

Need vintage Waverly ferrules? Try your leather store.
I was in need of a set of ferrules for vintage Waverly 4-on-a-plate mandolin tuners with 0.21" diameter posts, but no one wanted to part with a vintage set. Tom Wittrock, of Third Eye Guitars here in Springfield, MO (late 50's Les Paul guru), suggested I check the local leather store and damn if he wasn't right on! For less than $10 I got a bag of 50 ferrules that fit perfectly, seriously, these were a perfect fit. They come in chrome,…
'88 Washburn Headstock recapitation
I'm working on a repair to a Washburn EA50 headstock. Someone previously tried to repair this with a dowel, which likely worked until it was strung up. I've routed a slot and created a biscuit, and built a jig to hold both parts of the headstock in the same plane and clamp everything tight (some cauls and threaded blocks of maple with 1/4-20 machine screws). The plan is to use System 3 gel epoxy (a'la Beau Hannum) and then add a coup…
