Sourcing Concentric Volume/Tone pots for Sire Marcus Miller Bass

I've had a customer bring in a Sire Marcus Miller with a faulty volume pot. Currently I have an alpha concentric pot installed but it's too big for the cavity with all the wiring, pre-amp etc. and the knobs don't fit the shaft. I tried using insulation to widen the shafts but the discrepancy between the centre of each knob (Upper and Lower) has them bumping up against eachother and moving in tandem. Does anyone know where to source thi…

Seeking 1970 Fender Jazz Bass Pickups

I realize this is a long shot, a local musician has a 1970 Fender Jazz Bass he bought as original. He recently found out the pickups had been replaced. Other than Reverb, does anyone k ow of a set or where else these may be found? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Owner wants to try to at least be period correct and as close to original as he can.

Presentation and first post

Hey there! Newbie here. I thought it would have been cool to show just a pic of a current work I'm doing for a customer. Basically this was a brand new bass, never played, cause it was delivered with non uniform fretboard, a broken truss rod and warped neck. I had to remove the old fretboard (ebony), reinstall a new double action truss-rod, compensate the eight of the fretboard with 2 layer of black veneer (since this is a neck-through t…

Shellac on maple fingerboard?

I’m serious here, maybe crazy or funny, but please forgive me should it be obvious, because I don’t know shellac good enough to really know by experience if that’s doable or not would it be stupid to use some recipe on shellac for an electric Bass fingerboard finish? Would it be a good “filler” or way of giving some body in preparation for a finish like nitro or poly? Would it scratch like hell sooner than later? Could it be easily rebuilt…

Thanks for the info Jacob. I’ve used oils on some maple fingerboards yet and I like it, but it’s not for everyone’s taste, now I’d like to try with shellac for glossy finish for those who think that’s…

Ric Bass Mystery underneath fretboard

I had a customer bring in a '76 Ric 4001 with a fretboard separation from the neck around the 3rd and 4th frets. I tried squeezing it closed and the board would not budge. I figured maybe dried glue, wood or schmutz was impeding the fb from laying back down so I made a special little palette knife with a hooked edge to clean it out. I instead hit metal. After a bunch of hemming and hawing since nothing was budging we opted to remove the…

Gibson ES175 Bracing Issues...

Hey Looth Group, A customer brought me a Gibson 2015 59' Reissue ES175. In addition to the normal setup/maintenance that needs to be taken care of, the customer complained about an issue with the bracing. The three pictures below are what he was referring to. There's obviously a break in the wood and appears to be some separation in the glue joint. This is located right underneath the edge of the bridge on the bass side.

Current market value of Gibson guitars being in a bubble not withstanding, one of the things that the top I removed had going for it was that the top was glued on with cascamite and came off super eas…

Strange(?) bellying on Martin 000-15 SM

Just realized that I posted this on the main feed earlier and should have posted it here. Apologies for my poor posting skills. Will go and delete the original now.... Hello all, I’m new around here and excited to continue lurking and learning, taking in all the great content and the knowledge of all you experienced looths. I am more familiar with building than repairing, but I am interested in learning all I can about both. I’m happy to…

Yeah, I don't know. I would start by calling Customer Service. They will either direct you to a warranty operation for verification or if they let you send the pics, they might just issue a Return Aut…

missing ferrule and screw on Fender branded Schaller lite bass tuner

Hi gang, I am looking, without success so far, for a ferrule and string on this gold fender tuner (made by schaller). Neither company has the spare part and I couldn't source it anywhere. Tips? Do you have something like it in a spare parts bin? I don't have a lathe but I could bribe a friend to make one if I can't find it. And the screw! Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Ciao, Max

Have you considered contacting Schaller and seeing if they can ship the part you need? I've been amazed at how accommodating manufacturers can be. I know you can purchase single tuning machines (saw S…
