Can't access truss rod
I bought a boutique guitar, used from Guitar Center. I really want to like this guitar. I just got it a couple of days ago. Looking forward to doing a setup. The neck is straight. I went to add some relief and found that the wood around the truss rod keeps the 4mm hex key from engaging. Any suggestions on how to hog out enough wood to get access? I was thinking of superglueing some 180 sand paper to a 4.5 mm hex key and sanding the…
Comparing abrasives for dry-sanding finishes
I love the option of levelling a finish with dry paper as it's so much easier to see your progress, though I'm not convinced dry paper has much advantage over wet sanding with good silicon carbide paper after levelling. The dry-sanding options I'm aware of include Eagle's Assilex/Buflex, Klingspor's GreenTec, 3M's Flexible Polishing Papers, Micromesh, etc. I've used the 1st 2 in this list and found that the GreenTec clogs faster, but it'…

When chips happen--customers, expectations, and responsibility
Hey all, I am really enjoying digging through the looth group. I have not yet watched all the ding kings vids or read all the amazing comments and articles here, but I've been appreciating some of the loothing for dollars stuff, seeing other people's intake sheets, discussions about dealing with customers, and it led me to this question: How do people deal with customer expectations, liability, and the inevitable accidents that can happ…
Crappy Martin binding glue
So, I've seen people having to deal with crappy binding glue on newer Martin's. I have a D35 at 50 (2015) and the purfling has separated from the guitar body all the way around both the top and bottom of the guitar due to heat. Not only that but the binding has separated from the purfling in spots. The glue is still tacky and it's almost like a thick stain as it has impregnated the top and sides, making it impossible to completely rem…
A little trick to handle small laqcuer chips
Evrybody knows it. Guitar dropped and ....chips. Often it can be fixed easily but very often you need the color. In my case it was a Jackson with a metallic red. I had all the chips but how to handle. Tweezer were no option. The chips flipped away. I used a small sewing needle. I've flattened the tip using some sandpaper on the workbench. Then I put a drop of thin superglue on a piece of paper, dipped the needle right in an pushed it on…

Fretwork Processes...
Hey everyone, I could use some advice as far as the fretting process is concerned. I’ve been doing guitar repair since around 2008, I opened my business doing guitar repair in September of 2021, and I’ve always felt that fretwork has been the most challenging part of this job. I’m getting to the point now where I finally feel like I’m getting the hang of it, but I’m not where I want to be yet. I should mention that I use the Erlewine…
