I'm fairly new to CNC and am attempting to set up for a fretboard carve. I'm using a one year old ShopBot Desktop Max. This is the first I've found a problem like this. I made some practice blanks and thought I had everything the way I wanted it until I measured me fret distances. Using calipers from the nut to the center for the first fret slot I get 1.399" and I'm expecting 1.4346. I brought up the file and used the measuring tool on Vcarve and it measures 1.4346". I can't see how that measures out in the file and it carves shorter. I replaced the blank and tried again and it slotted exactly the same as the first time, 1.399. I'm going to try some random measurements and see how that goes but is this common? Does anyone have a clue where I can start to find the problem? Thank you for any help.
Sounds like you got it figured out but have you trammed your machine in general? Sometimes some stepper motor calibration is really needed.
Mine was off by like 1/16" in the Y axis over 36" which was subtle enough not to notice but totally screwed me for doing very fine work. Took me 2 years to figure it out.

It took me a long time to work out how to make acoustic necks on the CNC. I use Aspire, not VCarve. Using the method I developed, you need a minimum of about 6" of Z height when you have a 5" mill inserted to mill the heel, and many CNC machines won't accommodate that. You are milling down on the endgrain on the heel. There might be a way to do a 2-sided toolpath so that you could lay the blank sideways to mill the heel, I haven't worked on that though. I don't know if using this method you could do it in VCarve.

Michael, no I don't. I'm using the CNC for Luthiers course on Robbie O'Briens site. Bob Mizek presented the course. There is a section on there about doing fretboards. It gives all the info I need I just need to follow instructions. Can you tell me what gadget you're talking about? I would like to get to the point where I can actually carve the neck if I want to. I think that involves adding a 4th axis.

I want to thank both of you for your help. A rookie mistake. I had set a previous cut of the fretboard outline to 'outside' and forgot that it carried over to the next toolpath. I redid it and set it to 'on the line' and its all good now. Thanks again

Are you sure you are set to cut "on" the vector on your toolpath?

9 times out of ten these issues aren’t the software it’s the CNC itself or order of operations. Something might be binding on your machine causing one of the 3 axis to be out of whack. Im assuming you homed the machine first too.
