I recently picked up a used custom guitar that the seller said he bought in Vietnam Nam many years ago. I bought it as a wall hanger due to the wonderful Mother of Pearl work, especially on the back. It was very apparent that the top on this instrument was sunken at least 3/8 of an inch, as the weird bridge setup was heightened to the max and there was barely any action height. Once I took it apart and removed the foam inside, I was able to see there was only one set of bracing, an x-brace that spanned the top between the f holes, and no lateral bracing anywhere even though it looked like the builder had marked for one on underside of top just past end of neck (hence the crack in top on right side of neck. The bridge eschusions are free floating loosely in the walnut bridge, and you can see where the holes were drilled into the top to allow for clearance…

My interest is this - since it has an electric pickup, what value does a free floating top have to the sound quality of the guitar? Would the solution to fixing the sunken top be a sound post mounted under the bridge area? I have a couple of old full hollow body electrics that have a support post (1/2” by 3/4”) in the center, so my limited understanding is this construction is that adding another brace or two plus sound post might be worth it.
