The archived video and recent Council of Elders were very helpful in upping my binding reattachment game. Now I need to correct how much I've been charging! Someone mentioned that Martin pays $90/individual separation, I believe regardless of the length of the separation. Does this include finish repair, if needed? Any other guidelines on pricing for binding reattachment will be appreciated. Thanks! Neil
They pay $90 for binding repair “with touchup” and $80 without. Basically they always send the authorization for “with touchup” and never ask if it actually needs touchup. I tell customers “you dont w…
Hello again folks, how is everyone!
So I'm curious about what people here think about re-tops, who's done them, and what sorta ballpark rates you've charged for past completed jobs.
I've got a bit of a wild one here, so strap in if you've got a couple minutes for story time!
Back in 2012, I traded an HD28V of mine for a cool 1966 D-35 that needed some work. Basically, the body and neck of the guitar were fine apart from…
Oh yes, it is absolutely not down to financial matters here, or I'd have abandoned it completely hahaha, I've been thinking more about it, perhaps I will take the plunge, and have a bit of silly fun w…
Need some guidance for binding repairs.
I'm using the "Martin method" using CA glue and tape for re-attaching the binding.
From there:
Scrape glue
400 grit to level
Brushing on Lacquer
400 grit to level
Meguiars #1
Meguiars #3
Meguiars #7
All by hand.
But I recently purchased a Proxxon hand polisher.
I'm still getting big marks. Its usually "ok", but I'm noticing huge swirls. Not pro.
I do not have the money/space for…

I suspect your issue stems from not sanding to a high enough grit before polishing. Check out Eagle Abrasives "Assilex" dry papers. Stew Mac has them. Not cheap, but they last a long time. You can…

I had someone comment on my Instagram page that they are having trouble finding anyone to do a Martin binding repair for them. I told him I'd post something here. Please comment if you would do that and I'll send your info to him.

I should be able to do it. Chalmers Guitar Repair. Citrus Heights, about 1/2 hr from Sacramento. Thanks- Carl
So, I've seen people having to deal with crappy binding glue on newer Martin's. I have a D35 at 50 (2015) and the purfling has separated from the guitar body all the way around both the top and bottom of the guitar due to heat. Not only that but the binding has separated from the purfling in spots. The glue is still tacky and it's almost like a thick stain as it has impregnated the top and sides, making it impossible to completely rem…
In the process of evaluating the repairs needed on this guitar I checked to see if the truss rod was working. There is hole in the transverse brace where you would normally insert a truss rod, but all I see is the end of a metal bar with a smallish hole in the center. I tried several allen wrenches that would fit in the hole, but nothing seems to grab. Did they really eliminate the adjustable truss rod on this vintage reproduction? Here'…

A reproduction with that much wrong?!?! Did the thing go of a cliff in the back of a car without a seat belt, get thrown, and wash up 10 miles south?

I've been slowly chipping away at a rebind on a Gretsch streamliner with full on rotted binding. The repair was started by a luthier in KC that passed away a couple years ago and I inherited the repair after it sat for a few years. I've glued some binding back in place on martins with the Pacer canopy glue, and that has worked out fine in the past. I did a test w/ some new ABS from stewmac that I was going to use for rebinding the gr…

Hey Dalton! Have you found a better alternative than canopy glue for your ABS binding yet? I've had a similar issue finding an adhesive for celluloid binding repair that won't attack NC lacquer. Karl…
We had a Martin 1997 DM come in with all the binding falling off. Got that all glued back on and it needed some minor finish touchup down on the lower bout. This clouded like typical moisture blush does, but doesn't behave like typical blush. We can't sand it off, can't buff it off, thinner and butyl cellosolve (blush remover) both cause it do dissipate while it's wet, but as soon as it cures back out, the blush returns. Tem…

Sometimes you just need to come to the conclusion that you're screwed, and so free to get aggressive. Hard wet sanding with 800 grit and 10 minutes on the coarse buffing wheel. Blush is nearly gon…
