I consulted the Flexner book for reference using butyl cellosolve in lacquer. As expected it says ratios into lacquer are trial and error. I'm looking for an answer to best re-flow 70s Gibson lacquer to melt with new over sprayed lacquer. What's my best bet ratio butyl/lacquer to avoid adhesion issues? Thanks in advance! -Brent

I've been asked to spray a couple of guitars opaque white using urethane. I've never sprayed much other than clearcoat on acoustics. I'm not sure how to go about this. Since they want urethane I thinking of getting Mixol and mixing that with the lacquer and then using the same lacquer untinted for the topcoats. I see a lot of negative reviews about Mixol. We had a Martin 1997 DM come in with all the binding falling off. Got that all glued back on and it needed some minor finish touchup down on the lower bout. This clouded like typical moisture blush does, but doesn't behave like typical blush. I have an Epiphone explorer that suffered a vertical neck break in shipping. I'm in the middle of repairing the break a la Ted Woodford's remedy. My question is, what would be the polyurethane you'd recommend to cover the break? A couple of things to consider/questions I have: The neck color is not quite all the way black but the customer is fine with it being darker than the original color. Hi all, I’ve done one successful rattle can refin in nitro and now assembling a spray set up. I’m totally new to spraying using a real spray setup and have never mixed colors. Does anyone have a recipe for a nice vintage 2-tone sunburst using, I assume, colortone or trans tint colors? I’ll try and attach a pic of what I’m going for. There is a little red appearance between the two top burst colors.

As seen in the picture. I gotta get this build done in one week and realized I didn’t have black plastic side dots so I whipped some up out of ebony dowel stock. For some reason a yellow stain comes out after I spray with lacquer. I sanded back one time already and respirated but here we are once again. What’s going on here?

This guitar will have a piano black finish on most of it and translucent black over the red fabric areas. The client also wants the white binding to be aged. I will be sealing and grain filling with a polyester sealer. My thinking is to tint the first coal of sealer to age the binding , then seal over it with clear. Then tape off binding while spraying color coats. Anyone got an easier way? Suggestions?

I do have a question. I want to pore fill Spanish Cedar. I’m wanting a glass smooth finish. Im finishing with urethane. I usually use a polyester sealer that I spray on ( simtec) but it takes several coats. I have some z Poxy. Can I pore fill with it and then spray sealer? What say you all?

Haven't done any finish work on this yet, just made and installed the patch. Customer is not concerned about perfection, but this poly is extremely brittle and as you can see, it's flaking off left and right. My thought is to stabilize and do local touch up on the perimeter and then spray the patch. Thoughts on technique and medium for this one?
