Speaking of Trevor Gore... I've started using falcate bracing on my ukuleles and in making the braces, 3 strips of .0625" spruce are bent and then put in a bent lamination glue up rig using epoxy. Bending spruce is no fun on a hot pipe. It's slow, fussy, the fibers want to delaminate. I have been thinking about building a small dedicated steam box. Pulling all 3 of the strips out at once and bending them over a form with a metal back…
I tried it once for trying to bend mandolin sides. This was in 2006, back when the internet wasn't nearly as useful as it is today, so the attempt was pretty incomplete I think. If I remember correctl…
In the process of evaluating the repairs needed on this guitar I checked to see if the truss rod was working. There is hole in the transverse brace where you would normally insert a truss rod, but all I see is the end of a metal bar with a smallish hole in the center. I tried several allen wrenches that would fit in the hole, but nothing seems to grab. Did they really eliminate the adjustable truss rod on this vintage reproduction? Here'…

A reproduction with that much wrong?!?! Did the thing go of a cliff in the back of a car without a seat belt, get thrown, and wash up 10 miles south?
I just opened a repair shop and the first repair was to remove a broken 1/8" hex wrench ball end from the truss rod nut of a Turner RB4 Renaissance Bass. I read of all sorts of theories on how to extract/remove. None of them had recorded actual attempts of the theories. There's probably others on here but I haven't found them. The ball end was loose and mangled at the rear of the nut sleeve. I tried fairly benign methods first. Heat…

I'm the proud new owner of a "new to me" Fireball Meteor CNC machine. It feels really odd to have a computer in the shop but I guess I need to get used to that. Fortunately for me, I am well versed in CAD, unfortunately not so much on the CAM side of things. My 3 kids are all experts and are steepening the learning curve dramatically, this would be overwhelming if they weren't helping. So far I'm using the Fusion 360 personal use versio…

Here's the video of how it's going so far, skip to 18:48 for the CNC part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyoosBNV6xQ Pretty good I think but I still have a long ways to go. My youngest son and I did g…
Hello fellow Looths, I had a question in regards to a curious issue from a customers guitar. The guitar was brought to me in part because the customer was having an issue where the guitar was intermittent and would ground out. It's a partscaster with an HH pickup configuration, one volume, one tone, 5 way switch, and the tone control splits the humbuckers. The pickups are quick connect Dimarzio's. I took the pickguard off and noticed tha…

if it is the jack blade making contact with the shielding inside the jack hole, then you could try a puretone jack. It's got a smaller footprint and two smaller blades that contact the tip rather than…
Someone came to me with an old Gretsch afflicted with binding rot. The cream binding was mostly intact, with some pitting and discoloration in various spots, and only a couple of pieces loose. The owner was aware that the only sure cure was the removal of the old binding, and then rebinding the guitar. They didn't want to invest that much money into a repair. I rediscovered a StewMac video from 2017 called "Guitar repair using kitchen…

Well, given enough time, we shall all be dust. I just hope the Gretsch doesn't come back.
I am a relatively new ”looth”…an amateur/hobbyist at this point, but have recently retired and plan to do much more in retirement. One thing that I am needing at this point is to equip my shop with some better vises and other work-holding equipment. So far I have just used a parrot vise, which has been okay (but not great) for the work I have done so far. I was about to invest in StewMac’s classic Guitar Repair Vise, but one thing I’m r…
Hi Robert, I'll try to offer as much advise as I can. I'm a little biased as you can imagine but I'll try to do my best to be impartial. I don't know based on your question whether you do more building…
Hello looths worldwide ! 🌍 I just moved into a bigger space, called "Comme un Établi" here in Rennes, France (https://www.commeunetabli.fr/). It's a pretty cool space, with shared tools and knowledge, in which I have 13 square meters dedicated solely to my loothing business. People here have different jobs (leather work, wood work, metal work, book repair, furniture repair, etc.), and are used to offer workshops to people. I'm looking for…

Thanks both of you ! A soldering class could definitly be nice, since pickup swapping is the thing I started tinkering with when I started to play. Basic setup would be the main attraction but I'll have…
