feedback on Les Paul Headstock repair

I need some suggestions from the many great repair senseis out there. The customer is fine with a structural repair and not concerned about making it invisible. I told him you will see anything I do. He was fine with that and has a budget of between $700-1000. It's a clean break. nothing missing, It closes tightly.. I was thinking either 1) the generic double splines one on either side of truss rod and touchup as best I can. Or 2) the ab…

With a break like this with plenty of surface area, I would just glue it without any additional supports. My glue of choice is hot hide glue, but there will be lots of opinions on that and many option…

Finishing over Signatures

I was approached by a local music venue about finishing over the signatures on this Dean guitar. I have finished over signatures before, but never an entire guitar. The main challenges, as I see it, with this endeavor is prepping the existing finish. Cleaning the existing finish without disturbing the signatures will be time consuming enough, but abraiding/sanding the finish will be cost prohibitive. I have already experimented on a test…

Why do you think they faded? Sunlight, chemical issue, abrasion?

Mohawk wood touch up and repair workshop

Has anybody here done the Mohawk wood touch up and repair workshop? Kind of expensive, wondering how much of it would be useful in guitar world.

The burn-in stuff hasn't been touched since the class, like 12 years ago... Epoxy putty and various markers got used up fast, still use the rubber block and apron some. ... the blendal colors wi…

The rattle can toner thread (for touch up and repair)

Hi everyone. I have begun to incorporate more rattle can toner work in my touch up and cosmetic repairs. I have been using Mohawk toners so far and I am now trying out a different one of their toner products that is new to me. I use Mohawk Ultra Flo Ultra Bond for my clear coats. I thought it might be helpful to have a dedicated thread to the topic of rattle can toner as it pertains to touch up. Particularly headstock breaks that incorp…

Autograph pen clear gloss top coat question

Anybody ever put a clear coat over top of this type of pen. Customer has a Fender Edge signature strat that he had signed by The Edge. So yeah, no pressure on me for this job. I'm thinking I'll try on a scrap guitar with Mohawk Ultra Flo Ultra Bond, which is my go-to for most cosmetic jobs that require painting.

The Edge strat is a urethane finish right? My only concern now is my guitar is Nitro. I better just do some tests ;-) Thanks again!

Blending in a neck break repair.

I'm looking for advice and feedback on this touch up. It's my second one of these carbon fiber fabric repairs, my first turned out much better. I used the powdered pigments to match the color of the original wood, which was exposed along the margins of my repair, then I used glass slides to match the color of the lacquer. I then used The Mohawk brush tip marker, which I don't think I'll use again because I couldn't get straight lines.…

So, This doesn't strike you as a color coat airbrush technique issue? I have watched your video airbrushes.

Pigment Powder Kit

After watching Jeff Jewitt's Touch Up for Builders video, I began looking for a source with a selection of pigments like he has. I started by looking at Mohawk Blendal powder stains, but they only had 6 of the 12 pigment colors I was looking for. I widened my search, and exchanged e-mail with a couple of Etsy vendors. I was fortunate enough to find KonstantasShop which offers 24 pigment colors. While I suspect this collection is targete…

Tannin bleed through

I repaired this double neck SG geetar with mahogany splints. Sealed the new hog with shellac, pore filled with ca, more shellac, then a thin layer of Stewmac white color tone in nitro, then a few coats of poly, then Mohawk ultra flo (cuz I can’t buff the neck) . I seem to be getting strange bleed through into the white (it wasn’t there before). Tannins??? Ideas? Thanks
