Bass Neck Stiffness, Can't Get Enough Relief
Hello, I hope everyone is having a great 4th of July weekend so far. I was recently asked by a friend to work on a cheap S101 bass someone had given to him. It had no electronics and it was severally back bowed. After finishing up the electronics, I did the set up. He wanted the guitar tuned low, to Drop C. So, I went out and bought some Ernie Ball Power Slinkies 55-110. Once I got to the nut depth check, it was clear there were large, g…
What do you do when you get a knock off guitar on your bench?
I have a "fender", which I believe is a knock off, in my shop. I didn't immediately catch that it was a fake, but as I worked on it it's become fairly undeniable, in my opinion. For the neck — the fretboard is made from two pieces of rosewood, the headstock decal doesn't look right, the truss rod is metric, the tuners don't look like a MIA Fender, and there's no walnut plug on the truss access. The model name being wrong is suspicio…
Gretsch Rally Hell
Just sharing some info to procrastinate my nth attempt at getting this thing together. and some venting. If you get one of these in with electronic issues, estimate high. Customer brought in a Gretsch Rally in pieces that he picked up from the last repairman (who died), and just wants it to play. Minor binding repair and a weirdly-angled zero fret were relatively easy to deal with. The dead electronics are the main problem.…

Help With Wiring Diagram - SUPER SWITCH
Hi fellow loothers! :) Now, I am not an electronics guru. I can follow a nice graphical wiring diagram when hooking up electronics. I have a friend who wants to utilize a superswitch in his Stratocaster like this: Position 1: Bridge Position 2: Bridge + Middle (series) Position 3: Middle Position 4: Middle + Neck (series) Position 5: Neck I have searched the internet. Either I am not good enough at searching, or it doesn't exist. And that could…

Wiring Overhaul - Music Man Reflex Game Changer
Would you have any recommendations on wiring configurations and piezo controllers to replace the electronics in my Music Man Reflex, which used to have the Game Changer system? The guitar has an HSH pickup configuration with a piezo bridge pickup. It has three existing holes for Volume/Tone/Blend, a blade switch slot, and a 3-way switch hole. When I bought this guitar about a decade ago, the Game Changer system offered a mind-numbingly a…

Gibson Chet Atkins PreAmp help
Hey all, wondering if any electronics wizards out there might have any insights on an '88 Gibson Chet Atkins. I do not have the guitar in my shop, but the owner has described the problem thusly... "it sounds like it's over driven or the battery is worn out when I plug it in to a board directly and play it with very little output.. and also.. it will not work through a direct box." He has already had it looked at by another reputable shop…
Regluing Taylor bridges and others with embedded electronics
I was recently asked to do some set up work on a Taylor GS Mini when I noticed the bridge beginning to lift at the back corner on the treble side. The pickups/electronics are mounted through the bridge plate and bridge, which is not something I've dealt with before and I'm wondering about how you all approach bridges like this. Any tips, tricks, warnings, etc. Would you tend to remove the bridge and reglue (if so, how nightmarish is it d…
Taking in work from local shops
I was recently contacted by a popular independent guitar in my town asking if I'd be interested in taking in some repair work from them. They do their own basic set-ups and electronics work in-house, but the owner is looking for someone to pass along the structural repairs, body work, restorations etc. that pass through his store. I'm not super-enthusiastic about the store taking a cut of the repair cost, but the increase in work volume…
Grease Bucket Circuit Woes
I've done the Fender Grease Bucket Circuit mod on a lot of Strats and it always works. A customer recently brought in a 335 kit for wiring. It got 3-TV Jones humbuckers, each wired to a Seymour Duncan Triple Shot Mounting Ring, 3 separate volume controls and a master tone with the Grease Bucket circuit. My client wanted to see a clear diagram of the wiring, so I got GuitarElectronics.com to generate one. I've used them several times in…

Curious Grounding Issue...
Hello fellow Looths, I had a question in regards to a curious issue from a customers guitar. The guitar was brought to me in part because the customer was having an issue where the guitar was intermittent and would ground out. It's a partscaster with an HH pickup configuration, one volume, one tone, 5 way switch, and the tone control splits the humbuckers. The pickups are quick connect Dimarzio's. I took the pickguard off and noticed tha…
3 way rotary switch, volume & tone
Any electronic wizards know how this switch would be wired for a simple volume / tone circuit for two single coil pups? I cannot find a good answer using the internet search so far. A diagram for dummies would be amazing.
