Loothing for Dollars: The Multiple-Looth Shop
Insurance
Hi all, To those of you that work out of your house, how are you insuring your home/business? We are moving house and just had a homeowners policy cancelled due to my home business. Given how easy it is for these companies to deny claims, I want to make sure I do everything on the up and up. I'm in New York, and have Heritage for instruments that come in and out of my shop.
F Bass Is Hiring
We at F Bass Inc have been crafting boutique basses out of Hamilton, ON since 1978 and we’re looking for a Master Builder to join our small but mighty team. Applicants must have a sharp eye, strong organizational skills and the ability to problem solve in creative ways. Someone who genuinely loves crafting custom instruments and appreciates the little details even more so. If you pride yourself on precision and creativity and get a kick…
Humidity stability, moisture meters
It's that time of the year when I start to get all paranoid on the humidity levels of my shop. It happens at this time as the heating seems to send my hygrometers out of whack and it's quite difficult to keep things stable. So far i've been relying on keeping a 45% constant humidity in an automated system I built on Domoticz (similar to Home Assistant), which control a humidifier and dehumidifier. I'm not that confident i got this nailed…

West Systems Epoxy
Hey Everyone! I have never used west systems epoxy but see it mentioned all over the guitar community. Could anyone with experience let me know what a good "opening order" is for this brand of epoxy and what the common uses are for it in your shop vs. the stuff I keep buying from home depot. Thanks!

How Smart is Your Shop, with Ted Bergstrand
What lines do you carry and which ones feel worth it?
Hey! I am in the process of switching to full time repair from a home shop and in preparation have picked up a few product lines. So far I have D'Addario, LR Baggs, K and K and Fishman. I worked at a retail store and did all the ordering so it was easy to get these set up. Does anyone on here have opinions or suggestions for lines that they do well with. I do a lot more acoustic than electric work but was considering seymour duncan as a l…

The Gurian Pinned Neck Joint Neck Reset
Martin M38
Just got a Martin M38 in the shop with several issues: 1 - hole in the side from an ill-advised (!) home attempt to install a strap button https://share.icloud.com/photos/00bluosDvgGzRWZBnuN8r2FGg 2 - bubbling of the neck finish over the entire length https://share.icloud.com/photos/089kvZZT3xeVbYiIlIn6uLg5Q For #1 I'm thinking I'll use Ian's scoopie technique after applying an inside patch. For #2, the neck also has some good sized dings i…
Continuing Education/Career Advice
Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some advice on training opportunities. My background and situation (briefly), I’m a self-taught guitar tech and electric luthier with 3 years experience (after 20yrs office work). I have a job in a high volume guitar shop doing setups and quality checks on outgoing/sold guitars. The store does repair work but I have not been included in this, despite many requests. I do not believe this is due to skill le…
